I am a multi-media artist as well as a certified Master Gardener. The ways in which I identify myself as an artist, botanist and conservationist are manifested in my work. I mimic intricate patterns of plants by abstracting them through a variety of media, including painting, mixed media and installation.
My current art is an ongoing investigation of growing and interacting with plants, understanding their usefulness in our daily lives, and creating works based on my fascination of the botanical world. I find inspiration in the history of ethnobotany, plant taxonomy, the discovery of botanical species, and the evolution of existing and fictional plants. I am focused on my own discovery of imagined species that will adapt, exist and be useful in the future.
I have exhibited at 535 Gallery, Artistry, MN Landscape Arboretum, Great Lakes Aquarium, Silverwood Gallery, Kolman and Pryor Gallery, SooVac, Fox Tax Gallery, HI Gallery, Umber Studios, Gallery 360, as well as my studio in the Northrup King Building. With a 2013 MSAB Artist Initiative grant I traveled to the Millennium Seed Bank in the United Kingdom, where I was given access to the world’s largest seed conservation archive to research and gather inspiration for my artwork. I then showcased these paintings at the MN Landscape Arboretum. In 2015 I completed my first site-specific installation at Silverwood Gallery where I suspended 5,632 plastic lunaria seedpods from their 20’ vaulted ceiling in a cloud formation. In 2016 I exhibited at Artistry showcasing large-scale paintings of fictional botanical species that will exist and adapt in the future due to climate change, and how particular botanical species adjust to an abundance or lack or water in their surroundings.
